Choosing a Halloween costume can be challenging when you are outfitting yourself, but it gets even more complicated when you need to coordinate costumes for a couple or group. Fortunately, there are many costumes and costume ideas designed to coordinate with others yet still look good individually.
Couples Halloween Costume Ideas
Most couples Halloween costumes are designed with a feminine and a masculine outfit. Period costumes, such as Renaissance costumes, make popular couples costumes and are fairly easy to procure or create. Fifties greasers can accompany girls in poodle skirts and cardigans, and a ’70s disco couple costume can easily be purchased or created with thrift-shop clothing.
Some Halloween costumes for couples are historical, such as Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Marc Anthony and former presidential couples. Certain costumes can also complement each other. For example, an angel pairs well with a devil, a cheerleader pairs with a football player, and a zoot suit complements a flapper costume. Inanimate objects, such as a pair of dice or a ball and chain, make excellent couples costumes, as well.
Group Halloween Costume Ideas
Group Halloween costumes, such as rock bands, cheerleaders or sports teams, may be determined by your group’s gender. Harry Potter costumes, Star Wars costumes and other ensembles based on popular books or series work well for mixed groups since they have male and female characters from which group members can choose. Series-inspired costumes also have characters with different personalities and dress styles, so group members can select conservative or sexy costumes reflecting their own personalities. Additionally, group members can decide if they prefer an evil or a kind character.
Inanimate objects can also work well as group costumes because they are gender neutral. For example, a group of teachers might dress up as different colored crayons.
Budget-Friendly Group and Couples Costumes
Some inexpensive group Halloween costume ideas are: union protesters, easily made with poster board signs; members of the opposite sex, easily achieved with wigs and borrowed or secondhand clothing; and a rainbow, easily made with existing clothing (each person dresses entirely in a single, different color – red, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, blue; this is best with groups of at least five who will be together most of the time).
Clothing around the house can be used to create inexpensive couples costumes, as well. Use an old wedding dress (or just a plain white dress) and a suit to create a bride and groom costume. Make a cowboy and cowgirl costume with jeans and plaid shirts (though you may have to purchase cowboy hats to complete the look). Regardless of your budget and group, you can find a costume that everyone will enjoy.
